Librarian II

An employee in this class performs professional-level librarian duties in one or more areas of a public library. The work may be specialized in nature or may consist of the more difficult tasks in more than one area. A Librarian II may also assume responsibility for administration of a specialized program or serve as a department head in a small library. Supervision may be exercised over professional and nonprofessional staff, and the incumbent may participate in the training of Librarian Trainees. The work is reviewed by a higher-level librarian or administrator through conferences, reports and observation. Does related work as required.

To be eligible, a candidate must now be serving and have served on a continuous basis with permanent or contingent permanent competitive status as a Librarian I, Librarian I (Spanish Speaking) or Librarian I (Children’s Services) for at least one (1) year in the jurisdiction in which the candidate seeks promotion immediately preceding the written examination date. Provisional time immediately preceding a permanent appointment to the same title(s) will be credited. Necessary Special Requirements Appointees must maintain a valid New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate throughout employment in this title.

The written test will cover
knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:
1. Information technology and the library; 2. Library practices and procedures; 3. Organizing data into tables and charts; 4. Supervision.
