What the job involves
The work involves responsibility for planning and directing library programs for pre-school and school-age children including programming, selecting materials, cataloging, etc. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Library Director with wide leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out professional activities. Supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinate clerical personnel. Incumbent does related work as required.
Minimum qualifications
A Master’s degree in Library Science or Library Information Science from a library school that is accredited by the American Library Association or recognized by the New York State Education Department as following accepted education practices and two (2) years of professional library experience, one
(1) year of which shall have been in the area of children's services subsequent to MLS.
Subject of examination
There will be no written or oral test for this examination. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a rating based upon an evaluation of their training and experience. Candidates must first complete an examination application and return it to the Orange County Department of Human Resources. This examination consists of a rating of Training and Experience and is being administered by the New York State Department of Civil Service using the World Wide Web. Approved candidates will be sent a notice containing directions to a website address needed to complete a Training and Experience Questionnaire. The Training and Experience Questionnaire will be available only to approved candidates, who will be required to complete and submit this questionnaire. Candidates will have a minimum of two (2) weeks to complete and submit the questionnaire. NOTE: Candidates will not be able to claim any credit for training or experience to be gained after the date of submission of the training and experience questionnaire. Langdon C.
