About Civil Service List

Civil Service List is an index of civil service examination announcements. It exists because the announcements are scattered across roughly a hundred agency websites in New York alone, each in its own layout, each taken down the day filing closes, and none of them tells you when a title was last tested.

Every row on this site is read from the issuing agency's own exam page, listed below. The page is fetched twice a day (06:10 and 18:10 Eastern). Fields are copied as printed: the title, exam number, type, dates, salary and fee are the agency's, not ours. Where an agency publishes only a list, the exam page carries the list row and a link to the notice; where it publishes the full announcement, the qualifications, duties, subjects and residency text are reproduced so the page is useful without the PDF.

How the history works

An announcement that disappears from an agency's board is marked "filing closed" with the date it was last seen, and kept for about a year. That record is what feeds the "last listed" column on agency and title pages. An agency page that fails to load does not close its announcements: a layout change or an outage is not evidence that filing ended, but a passed deadline is.

What this site does not do

It does not accept applications, sell study guides, guarantee that a listing is current to the minute, or interpret eligibility. Read the official notice and apply through the agency. If a row is wrong, tell us at the address on the contact page with the exam number, and it will be corrected or removed.
