What the job involves

An employee in this class performs professional-level librarian duties in one or more areas of a public library. The work may be specialized in nature or may consist of the more difficult tasks in more than one area. A Librarian II may also assume responsibility for administration of a specialized program or serve as a department head in a small library. Supervision may be exercised over professional and nonprofessional staff, and the incumbent may participate in the training of Librarian Trainees. The work is reviewed by a higher-level librarian or administrator through conferences, reports and observation. Does related work as required.

Minimum qualifications

Possession of a valid New York State Public Librarian's Professional Certificate*, and two (2) years of experience as a professional librarian (professional experience is defined as experience gained after being awarded a Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS), or a Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) or a valid New York State Public Librarian's Professional Certificate.) *Please attach to the application a copy of your New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate. Necessary Special Requirements Appointees must maintain a valid New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate throughout employment in this title.

Subject of examination

The written test will cover
knowledge, skills and/or abilities in such areas as:
1. Information technology and the library; 2. Library practices and procedures; 3. Organizing data into tables and charts; 4. Supervision.

Residency

is not required for taking any examinations. However, some jurisdictions, such as schools, libraries, etc., give hiring preference to residents. Some towns also require employees to establish residency within the township. For employment in a Suffolk County Department, with only limited exceptions set forth in Suffolk County Law, residency within Suffolk County or Nassau County is required within five years of employment with the county. In any case in which residency preference is given, the appointee(s) must meet a specific residency standard as defined in the Civil Service Rules. 16. Saturday
