Public Health Nurse

This class requires the performance of population health activities and preventive public health programming, including: community health assessment and improvement, rabies prevention, childhood lead poisoning prevention, communicable disease surveillance and reporting, Tuberculosis detection and treatment; childhood immunization, emergency preparedness, maternal child health, injury prevention, chronic disease prevention, and community outreach and education. While supervision is not a major function of this title, oversight and instruction will be provided to staff assigned to carry out the plans of care. Duties are performed with oversite by the Public Health Director and supervision by the Director of Preventive Services or Supervising Public Health Nurse. Does related work as required. Controlled Substance Screening: When you are offered a full-time or part-time, permanent or contingent permanent appointment at Ontario County, you will be required to complete a controlled substances screening prior to employment. Background Investigation: Candidates may be subject to a thorough background investigation and psychological evaluation to determine suitability for appointment. Applicants may be required to authorize access to educational, employment, criminal history and other records check as part of such investigation. Criminal convictions or other offenses are subject to evaluation and may result in disqualification. Applicants will be required to submit the necessary fees for the fingerprint processing, where required. Special Requirement for Appointment in School Districts or BOCES: Per Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, to be employed in a position designated by a School District or BOCES as involving direct contact with students, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required. **************************************************************

Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing AND possession of a licensure and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State. Special Requirement for Appointment: Possession of a valid New York State Operator's license at the time of appointment, and maintenance of such license throughout the tenure of employment in the position. Anticipated Eligibility - Experience: Applicants who lack thirty days, or less, of meeting the minimum qualifications by the date of the examination will be admitted conditionally to the examination. However, proof of the additional days’ qualifications must be submitted prior to the establishment of the eligible list. Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements: According to the amended Civil Service Law 54 (amended September 4, 2024), applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the age or education requirements are met.

There will be no written or oral test for this examination. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience against the background duties of the position. You are, therefore, asked to include in your application a summary of all pertinent training and experience in sufficient detail so that your background may be evaluated against the duties of the position.

In your summary of training include all college course work, formal in-service training, and seminars you have attended. You must specify either the number of credits received or the number of contact hours and dates of attendance. Also include a copy of your professional license or documentation indicating eligibility for licensure. Specify the date that your license was first issued. In summary of experience, you must specify the dates of your employment, the number of hours worked per week, your title, and the main duties for each. Be specific; vagueness and ambiguity will not be resolved in your favor. Candidates who submit incomplete applications or documentation may be disqualified. Any statements made in either the official application or the supplement may be checked for accuracy.
