Technical Specialist (Clinical Chemistry)

Under general supervision an incumbent of this class is responsible for supervising and performing specialized technical chemical analyses of specimens leading to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases at Westchester Medical Center. The procedures performed at this level are of a highly specialized nature. Incumbents must be proficient in all of the specialized technical and scientific procedures involved to be able to both perform the analyses, and provide technical consultation and guidance to others. Responsibility also involves ensuring the receipt, recording, grouping and labeling of specimens and the communication of test results to the attending physician. Supervision may be exercised over a number of medical technologists in providing technical expertise and guidance in the area of specialization. Does related work as required.

Either: (a) a Bachelor’s degree* in medical technology and six years of post-degree experience in an approved hospital or public health laboratory, including two years in clinical chemistry; or (b) a Bachelor’s degree* in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences and seven years of post-degree experience as described in (a); or (c) a Master’s degree* in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences and four years of post-degree experience as described in (a); or (d) a combination of training and experience as described in Section 58 1.5 of NYCRR Article 10 and seven years of post-degree experience as described in (a); or
(e) possession of a license and current registration issued by the New York State Education Department as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist and six years post license laboratory experience as described in (a).

There will be no written or oral test for this examination. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience against the duties of the position. There are no residence requirements to participate in the examination, but preference in appointment may be given to eligibles that have been residents in the appointing jurisdiction for 30 days prior to the examination and at the effective date of appointment.
