What the job involves

Under general supervision, an incumbent of this class is responsible for supervising and performing specialized technical preparation of histopathologic and cytopathologic specimens leading to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The procedures performed at this level are of a highly specialized nature. Incumbents must be proficient in all of the specialized and technical and scientific procedures involved to be able to both produce the preparations and provide technical consultation and guidance to others. Responsibility also involves ensuring the receipt, recording, grouping and labeling of specimens and communication regarding slide preparations with resident and attending pathologists. Supervision is exercised over a number of medical technologists in providing technical expertise and guidance in the area of specialization. Does related work as required.

Minimum qualifications

Either: (a) a Bachelor’s degree* in medical technology and six years of post-degree experience in an approved hospital or public health laboratory, including two years in cytology and/or histology; or (b) a Bachelor’s degree* in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences and seven years of post-degree experience as described in (a); or (c) a Master’s degree* in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences and four years of post-degree experience as described in (a); or (d) a combination of training and experience as described in Section 58 1.5 of NYCRR Article 10 and seven years of post-degree experience as described in (a); or (e) possession of a license and current registration issued by the New York State Education Department as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist and six years post license laboratory experience as described in (a).
* SPECIAL NOTE :
Education beyond the secondary level must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. ALL APPLICATIONS MUST HAVE COPIES OF THE APPROPRIATE LICENSE, CERTIFICATE, OR REGISTRATION.

Subject of examination

There will be no written or oral test for this examination. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience against the duties of the position. Be as concrete and specific as possible; vagueness and ambiguity will not be resolved in your favor. You are, therefore, asked to include in your application a summary of all pertinent training and experience. You will receive a grade based upon the college degree, continuing education credits and licensed work experience detailed in your application. When completing the application, indicate all training including any formal course work which was not part of the degree program or which has not yet resulted in a degree, any continuing education programs including convocations, seminars, workshops, etc., in which you have participated over the past six years. Specify either the number of credits received or the number of contact hours and dates of attendance. Indicate the date that your license was first issued. You must include a comprehensive description of each relevant position you have held. Specify your title, the dates of your employment and the number of hours worked per week. Any statements made in either the official application or supplement may be checked for accuracy. Any candidate who claims credit that he or she did not actually earn may be disqualified from this examination. Residency

There are no residence requirements to participate in the examination, but preference in appointment may be given to eligibles that have been residents in the appointing jurisdiction for 30 days prior to the examination and at the effective date of appointment. This examination will also be given on a promotional basis on the same day, and the resulting eligible list will have preference in making appointments. If you qualify for the promotional examination, you must file a separate application for each examination. Please note : The Westchester Medical Center is a public benefit corporation that is separate and distinct from the County of Westchester. Although it is not a Westchester County Department, employees at the Medical Center are public employees subject to the rules and regulations of New York State Civil Service Commission. Currently, confirmed by court ruling, the Westchester County Department of Human Resources administers civil service for the Medical Center. Should that decision change, Westchester County may suspend civil service examinations for this title and the eligible list for positions in this title may become dormant.
