Librarian I (Children’s Services)

This is the entry-level position for library school graduates who specialize in Children’s Services. Employees in this class are expected to learn the specific applications of professional training by the performance of duties under the supervision of professional librarians in higher level positions. Instructions may be issued at the beginning of each new assignment. Employees in this class are assigned work progressively more difficult as their experience in the field broadens. Supervision may be exercised over clerical personnel, paraprofessionals, and volunteers in assigned tasks. Does related work as required.

Master's Degree* in Librarianship from a school that is accredited by the American Library Association or recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable education practices, with a concentration in Children’s and/or Youth Services.

There will be no written or oral test for this examination. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a rating based upon an evaluation of their training and experience against the duties of the position being tested. Candidates must first apply on our website at https://humanresources.westchestercountyny.gov/ and complete an examination application . Approved candidates will be sent a notice containing directions to a secure website address at the New York State Department of Civil Service to complete a Training and Experience Questionnaire. The Training and Experience Questionnaire will be available for a minimum of ten days and approved candidates will be required to complete and submit the questionnaire within the submission period stated on the notice.

There are no residence requirements to participate in the examination, but preference in appointment may be given to eligibles who have been residents of the appointing jurisdiction at least 30 days prior to the examination and at the effective date of appointment.
