Library Director II

The position functions as an administrator of a library, overseeing the day-to- day operations and ensuring effective and efficient service and, in addition, time may be spent in professional library service activities. The work involves carrying out broad policy as determined by the library board. Direct supervision is exercised over the work of professional and clerical staff. Incumbent does related work as required.

A Master’s degree in Library Science or Library Information Science, possession of a current New York State Public Librarian's professional certificate at time of application and four (4) years of professional library experience, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity. NOTE: For purposes of qualification, professional library experience shall be defined as experience gained at a public, academic, school or special library, after the candidate received his or her Master of Librarianship (MLS) Degree. NOTE: A copy of your Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate must accompany your application. You must submit college transcripts* before being approved and admitted to take this examination. If required transcripts are not received within sixty (60) days of filing the application, candidates will be disqualified with no further notice. Only education gained at a regionally accredited college or university, or accredited by the American Library Association or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees is acceptable for purposes of qualification. *Transcripts downloaded from the Internet, grade reports or copies that do not identify the educational institution are unacceptable for purposes of qualification. Successful candidates will have their names inter-filed on a continuous recruitment eligible list in rank order regardless of the date on which the test was administered. A candidate’s eligibility will be for a period of one year beginning on the date their name was added to the list. Candidates are permitted to participate in this examination at one-year intervals. The Orange County Department of Human Resources reserves the right to terminate the continuous recruitment program at any time.

There will be no written or oral test for this examination. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a rating based upon an evaluation of their training and experience. Candidates must first complete an examination application and return it to the Orange County Department of Human Resources. This examination consists of a rating of Training and Experience and is being administered by the New York State Department of Civil Service using the World Wide Web. Approved candidates will be sent a notice containing directions to a website address needed to complete a Training and Experience Questionnaire. The Training and Experience Questionnaire will be available only to approved candidates, who will be required to complete and submit this questionnaire. Candidates will have a minimum of two (2) weeks to complete and submit the questionnaire. NOTE: Candidates will not be able to claim any credit for training or experience to be gained after the date of submission of the training and experience questionnaire. Langdon C.
