What the job involves

Under supervision of attending physician(s) and in accordance with NYS Law and Hospital Board regulations, an incumbent in this class provides medical and surgical care in surgical subspecialty areas of the Westchester Medical Center in support of professional staff. These areas include: neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, trauma/burn surgery, and otolaryngology. The scope of the functions and services provided by an incumbent is defined by the surgical staff to whom the incumbent is assigned and will be determined by the level of education, training, experience and achievement of the incumbent and the needs of the service area. Responsibilities include examining patients, formulating diagnoses and developing a treatment plan for patients, performing technical, clinical and surgical procedures, documenting patient progress and surgical care. This classification is distinguished from the Surgical Physician Assistant by the area of assignment and that the incumbent in this classification must have a year experience in a surgical subspecialty. A registered Physician Assistant may write prescriptions and medical orders; however, if employed at WMC, prescriptions must be counter-signed by an attending physician within 24 hours. Minimum qualifications

Two years of experience as a licensed Physician Assistant where the primary function of the position was providing medical care to patients, one year of which must have been in one of the surgical subspecialty areas. SUBSTITUTION : Experience as a Physician Assistant acquired while working under a valid limited permit can be counted toward the two years experience as stated above

Subject of examination

There will be no written or oral test for this examination. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience against the duties of the position. Be as concrete and specific as possible; vagueness and ambiguity will not be resolved in your favor. You are, therefore, asked to include in your application a summary of all pertinent training and experience. Residency

There are no residence requirements to participate in the examination, but preference in appointment may be given to eligibles that have been residents in the appointing jurisdiction for 30 days prior to the examination and at the effective date of appointment.
