What the job involves

Under general supervision, an incumbent of this class is responsible for supervising the operation of the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory at Westchester Medical Center, including all the administrative functions and the technical aspects involved in the specialized analysis and preparation of tissue, histopathology and cytopathology specimens leading to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The incumbents must be proficient in all of the specialized technical and scientific procedures involved to be able to both produce the preparations and provide technical supervision, consultation and guidance to others. Responsibility also involves ensuring the receipt, recording, grouping and labeling of specimens and communication regarding slide preparations with resident and attending Pathologists. Supervision is exercised over a number of medical technologists and incumbents provide technical guidance in the area of specialization. Does related work as required.

Minimum qualifications

Either: (a) a Bachelor’s degree* in medical technology and six years of post-degree experience in an approved hospital or public health laboratory, including four years in anatomic pathology; or (b) a Bachelor’s degree* in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences and seven years of post-degree experience as described in (a); or (c) a Master’s degree* in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences and four years of post-degree experience as described in (a); or (d) a combination of training and experience as described in Section 58 1.5 of NYCRR Article 10 and seven years of post-degree experience as described in (a); or (e) possession of a license and current registration issued by the New York State Education Department as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Cytotechnologist and four years post license laboratory experience as a clinical laboratory technologist or cytotechnologist in an approved clinical laboratory, including 3 years in the specialty (histology and/or cytotechnology).

Subject of examination

There will be no written or oral test for this examination. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience against the duties of the position. Be as concrete and specific as possible; vagueness and ambiguity will not be resolved in your favor. You are, therefore, asked to include in your application a summary of all pertinent training and experience. Residency

There are no residence requirements to participate in the examination, but preference in appointment may be given to eligibles that have been residents in the appointing jurisdiction for 30 days prior to the examination and at the effective date of appointment.
