Principal Detective Investigator

An employee in this class assists in directing and coordinating the activities of the investigative staff for the assigned units within the District Attorney's Office. The duties involve planning the work of the senior investigative and clerical staff. The incumbent assists in training the investigative staff in the operating procedures of the office. Supervision is received from the Chief and Deputy Chief Detective Investigator through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.

To be eligible, a candidate must now be serving and have served on a continuous basis with permanent or contingent permanent competitive status as a Senior Detective Investigator for at least eighteen (18) months in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Provisional time immediately preceding a permanent appointment to the same title(s) will be credited. Necessary Special Requirements At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State. At the time of appointment, employee must have completed an approved Basic Course for Police Officers from a police department within New York State.

The written test will cover
knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:
1. Evaluating information and evidence; 2. Investigative techniques and criminalistics; 3. New York State Laws; 4. Preparing written material in a police setting; 5. Understanding and interpreting written material; 6. Planning, supervising and administering police programs and activities.
