Principal Detective Investigator

An employee in this class assists in directing and coordinating the activities of the investigative staff for the assigned units within the District Attorney's Office. The duties involve planning the work of the senior investigative and clerical staff. The incumbent assists in training the investigative staff in the operating procedures of the office. Supervision is received from the Chief and Deputy Chief Detective Investigator through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.

An aggregate minimum of ten (10) years of experience supervising the investigations of a detective or plainclothes investigator while employed by a state, county, city, town or village police department within New York State, three (3) of which must have been within the last five
(5) years (supervising experience must include scheduling, time management, training, and discipline of subordinate officers); experience in testifying at trials or hearings and grand jury; and
at least eight (8) or more of the following:
Three (3) years’ experience in the
following:
1. Undercover operations as lead investigating officer and tactical coordinator;
2. Monitoring wiretap investigations as an affiant, coordinator, or plant manager;
3. Cultivating and handling confidential informants;
4. Obtaining search warrants and arrest warrants; Five (5) years’ experience in the
following:
1. Investigating homicides or pattern violent crimes with use of cell phone data analysis, social media analysis, witness interviews, and interrogations;
2. Organized crime investigations involving gambling, prostitution, narcotics or firearms trafficking, extortion, or counterfeiting and establishing conspiracy indictments;
3. Child exploitation investigations and related computer forensics;
4. Financial crimes investigations as lead investigating officer;
5. Public corruption investigations as lead investigating officer. Necessary Special Requirements At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State. At the time of appointment, employee must have completed an approved Basic Course for Police Officers from a police department within New York State.

The examination for this position will
consist of three parts:
I. The written test will cover knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such
areas as:
1. Evaluating information and evidence; 2. Investigative techniques and criminalistics; 3. New York State Laws; 4. Preparing written material in a police setting; 5. Understanding and interpreting written material; 6. Planning, supervising and administering police programs and activities.

is not required for taking any examinations. However, some jurisdictions, such as schools, libraries, etc., give hiring preference to residents. Some towns also require employees to establish residency within the township. For employment in a Suffolk County Department, with only limited exceptions set forth in Suffolk County Law,
