Captain (Police: Towns & Villages)

An employee in this class performs an important law enforcement function by acting as the second in command of a town or village Police Department. Work is performed under the direction of the Police Chief (Towns and Villages). Duties are performed according to established procedures and policies of the Police Department. Responsibilities include assigning officers to their posts, evaluating their work performances and instructing them in new and approved police methods. The incumbent performs both technical and administrative duties. Does related work as required.

To be eligible, a candidate must now be serving and have served on a continuous basis with permanent or contingent permanent competitive status as a Lieutenant (Police: Towns and Villages) in the jurisdiction in which the candidate seeks promotion for at least one
(1) year immediately preceding the written examination date. Provisional time immediately preceding a permanent appointment to the same title(s) will be credited.

The written test will cover
knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:
1. Law enforcement methods and practices; 2. New York State Laws; 3. Preparing written material in a police setting; 4. Understanding and interpreting written material; 5. Planning, supervising and administering police programs and activities.
