Captain (Police)

An employee in this class performs an important law enforcement function involving responsibility for the overall command of the bureau or section, according to established procedures and policies of the Police Department. Responsibilities include assigning officers to their posts, evaluating their work performances and instructing them in new and approved police methods. The incumbent performs both technical and administrative duties. Does related work as required.

To be eligible, a candidate must now be serving and have served on a continuous basis with permanent or contingent permanent competitive status as a Lieutenant in the Suffolk County Police Department for at least one (1) year immediately preceding the written examination date. Provisional time immediately preceding a permanent appointment to the same title(s) will be credited.
