What the job involves

An employee in this class provides screening and counseling services to individuals seeking admission to, or currently enrolled in, substance use disorder treatment programs. Work involves interviewing patients and prospective patients, as well as planning, implementing, and monitoring individualized treatment plans for each patient. Work is reviewed by a clinical and/or administrative supervisor through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.

Minimum qualifications

Either:
a) Current certification* from NYS Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) as a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC); or b) Possess the requirements necessary to be designated as a Qualified Health Professional (QHP)*** as defined in Title 14 NYCRR Part 800.3 (L), with one year of experience or satisfactory completion of a training program in the treatment of substance use disorders. *Please attach to the application a copy of your CASAC credential from NYS OASAS. ***Please attach to the application a copy of your requirements to be designated as a QHP. Necessary Special Requirements At time of appointment and during employment in this title, candidates are required to maintain status as a QHP. Depending on the nature of the assignment, at the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees may be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State. Candidates may be subject to a background investigation.

Subject of examination

The only subject of the examination will be an evaluation of the candidates’ training and experience. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience against the background of the duties of the position.
