What the job involves

An employee in this class performs testing and analysis on samples of drinking water, surface and ground waters, sewage, marine water, liquid and solid hazardous waste, and other substances suspected of causing a public health hazard. Work involves the use and general maintenance of sophisticated modern laboratory equipment. The incumbent performs many preparatory and routine functions independently, but performs more complex tasks under supervision. Work may involve training and/or oversight of subordinate laboratory personnel in preparing media, plating, staining, performing routine tests, and adhering to standard procedures. Does related work as required.

Minimum qualifications

Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by New York State with a Bachelor's Degree * in one of the Chemical, Environmental, Physical, Medical, or Biological Sciences, or Engineering, including or supplemented by sixteen (16) credit hours in Chemistry, including Organic Chemistry. *Please attach to the application a copy of your college transcript(s) which must have your name, college name and date of graduation printed on it by the institution. Grade reports, incomplete transcripts and other similar documents are unacceptable. Necessary Special Requirement At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.

Subject of examination

The written test will cover
knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:
1. Analytical chemistry, including techniques, equipment, and procedures for inorganic and organic analyses; 2. General laboratory practices, techniques, and equipment; 3. Organization and interpretation of data, including elementary statistical analysis and quality control; 4. Principles and applications of physics and chemistry related to the testing of both treated and untreated water.

Residency

is not required for taking any examinations. However, some jurisdictions, such as schools, libraries, etc., give hiring preference to residents. Some towns also require employees to establish residency within the township. For employment in a Suffolk County Department, with only limited exceptions set forth in Suffolk County Law, residency within Suffolk County or Nassau County is required within five years of employment with the county. In any case in which residency preference is given, the appointee(s) must meet a specific residency standard as defined in the Civil Service Rules. 16. Saturday
