What the job involves
An employee in this class performs entry level professional work conducting quantitative analyses on samples from marine and fresh surface waters, groundwater and industrial and domestic wastewater sources. An important aspect of this position is that its primary purpose is to monitor the composition of ground and surface waters so as to detect and guard against pollution. The work involves the supervised use and general maintenance of sophisticated modern laboratory equipment such as an auto-analyzer, an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, an organic carbon analyzer and a gas chromatograph. The incumbent performs some preparatory and routine functions independently, but performs more complex assignments under either direct or general supervision, depending upon the level of difficulty. Direct supervision may be exercised over the work of Laboratory Technicians and Aides. Does related work as required.
Minimum qualifications
To be eligible, a candidate must now be serving and have served on a continuous basis with permanent or contingent permanent competitive status as a Laboratory Technician or a Laboratory Technician (Public Works) possessing a Bachelor’s degree* in one of the natural sciences with at least sixteen (16) credit hours in Chemistry including Organic Chemistry in the jurisdiction in which the candidate seeks promotion for at least two (2) years immediately preceding the written examination date. Provisional time immediately preceding a permanent appointment to the same title(s) will be credited. *Please attach to the application a copy of your college transcript(s) which must have your name, college name and date of graduation printed on it by the institution. Grade reports, incomplete transcripts and other similar documents are unacceptable.

1. Analytical chemistry, including techniques, equipment, and procedures for inorganic and organic analyses; 2. General laboratory practices, techniques, and equipment; 3. Organization and interpretation of data, including elementary statistical analysis and quality control; 4. Principles and applications of physics and chemistry related to the testing of both treated and untreated water.
