What the job involves

An employee in this class plans, organizes and directs the activities of a Suffolk County laboratory engaged in the chemical, physical, bacteriological and/or biological testing of ground, surface, marine and waste waters, sewage, construction materials, nuisance insects and/or other samples. The work includes training, supervising and coordinating the activities of professional and technical assistants, and/or a laboratory staff, planning and executing special programs and research projects and performing the most difficult analyses. The work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through staff conferences, written reports and observation of laboratory operations. Does related work as required.

Minimum qualifications

To be eligible, a candidate must now be serving and have served on a continuous basis with permanent or contingent permanent competitive status as a Chemist III or Chemist III (Public Works) for at least two (2) years or as an Entomologist for at least three (3) years or as a Chemist II (Public Health), Chemist II (Public Works) or Chemist II (Environmental Control) for at least four (4) years in the jurisdiction in which the candidate seeks promotion immediately preceding the written examination date. Provisional time immediately preceding a permanent appointment to the same title(s) will be credited. Necessary Special Requirement Depending upon the assignment, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, the employee may be required to possess a Nuclear Gauge Certification (Radiological Safety) issued by the New York State Department of Health. At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.

Subject of examination

The written test will cover
knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:
1. Preparing written material; 2. Analytical chemistry, including techniques, equipment, and procedures for inorganic and organic analyses; 3. Administrative supervision; 4. Organization and interpretation of data, including elementary statistical analysis and quality control; 5. Principles and applications of microbiology related to the testing of both treated and untreated water.
