What the job involves
An employee in this class plans, organizes and directs the activities of a Suffolk County laboratory engaged in the chemical, physical, bacteriological and/or biological testing of ground, surface, marine and waste waters, sewage, construction materials, nuisance insects and/or other samples. The work includes training, supervising and coordinating the activities of professional and technical assistants, and/or a laboratory staff, planning and executing special programs and research projects and performing the most difficult analyses. The work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through staff conferences, written reports and observation of laboratory operations. Does related work as required.
Minimum qualifications
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree * in Chemistry, Biology, Physics or a related field, and seven (7) years of experience in the laboratory analysis of water, air, sewage and industrial waste, construction materials, or nuisance insects, at least two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity.
Subject of examination
The written test will cover
knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:
1. Preparing written material; 2. Analytical chemistry, including techniques, equipment, and procedures for inorganic and organic analyses; 3. Administrative supervision; 4. Organization and interpretation of data, including elementary statistical analysis and quality control; 5. Principles and applications of microbiology related to the testing of both treated and untreated water.
Residency
is not required for taking any examinations. However, some jurisdictions, such as schools, libraries, etc., give hiring preference to residents. Some towns also require employees to establish residency within the township. For employment in a Suffolk County Department, with only limited exceptions set forth in Suffolk County Law, residency within Suffolk County or Nassau County is required within five years of employment with the county. In any case in which residency preference is given, the appointee(s) must meet a specific residency standard as defined in the Civil Service Rules. 16. Saturday
