What the job involves
This work involves the operation of an alphanumeric keyboard to enter data from source documents into a computer database and to verify previously entered data. In addition, incumbents may also operate scanning equipment, categorize and index scanned documents and perform a variety of related clerical duties. Work is performed under general supervision and is verified according to department procedures. Incumbent does related work as required.
Minimum qualifications
Your application must clearly indicate
possession of the following requirements:
(A) Completion of 30 credit hours; OR
(B) One (1) year of clerical experience which involved data entry; OR
(C) Two (2) years active-duty service in the United States Armed Forces. (Please submit a copy of your DD214 or if currently active, a copy of your military orders) NOTE: Computer literacy will be evaluated during the probationary period. You must submit a complete application. Please be sure to answer all questions including dates of employment (month/year), number of hours worked per week and a detailed description of your clerical experience involving data entry as required by the qualifications noted above if applicable. A resume may NOT be submitted in lieu of completing the application. Applications that do not clearly indicate the required experience will be disapproved. You should submit transcript(s) with your application or within thirty (30) days of filing an application if qualifying under option (A). Transcripts downloaded from the internet, grade reports or copies that do not identify the educational institutions are unacceptable for purposes of qualification. Note: Your degree or credits must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. Subject of examination
(The test will be a performance test that will require you to use a conventional personal computer (PC) with a standard keyboard to perform various clerical tasks using simulated databases. The databases will be of a generic variety; you do not need any present knowledge of these databases in order to do well on the test. When you begin the testing program you will receive graphic on-screen instructions that tell you how to use the databases and how to take the test. The test will consist of three parts. In part one, you will be required to add, delete and update various records in a database. In part two, you will be required to look up records in a database and write down selected information from the records onto printed forms. In part three, the computer will present questions about the information that you wrote down in part two. You will enter your answers directly into the PC. Your rating on this test will be based on the amount of data entered and on the accuracy of those entries. NOTE: You will be notified of your scheduled test date at least 10 days prior to the test date via letter. The test will be held at Orange County Department of Human Resources, 255 Main Street, Goshen, NY 10924. The New York State Department of Civil Service has not prepared a test guide for this examination. However, candidates may find information in the publication "How to take a written test" helpful in preparing for this test.
