Physical Therapist Assistant (Training & Experience Examination)

This is a para-professional position involved with the treatment and prevention of neuromuscular or musculoskeletal disabilities by the application of direct physical therapy procedures to clients. It involves the use of physical agents such as heat, cold, electricity, water, and light and neuromuscular procedures. The work is performed under the supervision of a Physical Therapist who evaluates client needs, develops a treatment plan, and assigns specific treatment tasks to the assistant. A Physical Therapist is readily available at all times for advice and assistance. Supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinate employees as delegated by the Physical Therapist. A Physical Therapist Assistant does related work as assigned. Typical Qualifications RESIDENCY: Candidates must have been legal residents of the following jurisdiction(s) for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the written test: Livingston County, or One of the following Counties: Allegany, Genesee, Monroe, Ontario, Steuben or Wyoming Applicants must meet all requirements for one of the following qualification options in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment: Qualification Option # 1 2 Training/Education Completion of a two-year college program in a physical therapist assistant program; OR Completion of a program acceptable to the New York State Education Department (NYSED). A New York State Education Department limited permit to practice as a Physical Therapist Assistant. General experience None required. Supervisory experience None required. License/ Certification Certified and currently registered by the New York State Education Department as a Physical Therapist Assistant.
(1) If the appointing authority is a public hospital, an incorporated hospital or clinic, a licensed proprietary hospital, a licensed nursing home, a public health agency, a recognized public or non-public school setting, the office of a licensed physical therapist or in the civil service of the state or political subdivision thereof; AND
(2) The appointing authority has a licensed physical therapist who is available and willing to provide on-site supervision as described in NYS Education Law Article 136 § 6741-a. Other requirements See Special Qualifications below.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Appropriate licensure must be maintained throughout employment. Applicants appointed under Option 2 will be required to obtain their license in accordance with NYS Education Law Article 136 §6741-a.
