What the job involves
Responsible for the enforcement of laws, ordinances and protection of lives and property. Duties consist primarily of routine foot or car patrol tasks, assisting in criminal investigations and the apprehension of criminals.
CROSS FILER STATEMENT:
If you have applied for both State and local government examinations, you must arrange to take all your examinations at the State examination center by advising this agency no later than three weeks before the test date. If you have applied for other local government examinations, complete the cross filing form and submit to each civil service agency to make arrangements no later than three weeks before the date of the examinations. Citizenship: United States Citizenship is required at time of appointment. It is not necessary for admission to the examination. Driver’s License: Candidates must possess a valid New York State Operator’s license at time of appointment and maintenance of said license for the duration of employment. VETERANS: Reference the Veterans’ Preference section in the attached “Important Information”. NOTE: Conviction of a felony will bar appointment, and conviction of a misdemeanor or other offense may bar appointment. CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT: This examination is being held on a continuous recruitment basis. The written exam will be held periodically. When an exam is announced, applications for that date must be filed no later than the announced last filing date. Candidates who meet the qualifications and pass the exam will have their names placed on the eligible list in the order of final scores, regardless of the date on which they filed or took the test. Generally, the names of qualified candidates will remain on the eligible list for one (1) year. Agility tests will be scheduled as needed. Wayne County Human Resources or the Department of Civil Service reserve the right to terminate this special recruitment program. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND ADDITIONAL SCREENINGS: Candidates are subject to a satisfactory completion of an inclusive background investigation. Applicants may be required to authorize access to educational, financial, employment, criminal history, mental health records or other records. Family, neighbors, associates, and others may be interviewed. Derogatory information will be evaluated and may result in disqualification under Section 50(4) of the NYS Civil Service Law. At the discretion of the employing law enforcement agency candidates may be subject to additional screenings as a term and condition of employment, including but not limited to, fingerprinting and psychological testing. Psychological screening will be done by the Sheriff’s Dept. as part of the background investigation. Drug testing is included in the required medical exam. Investigative Screening: As stated in Section 58 of Civil Service Law, there will be a background investigation conducted in accordance with the standards of the Municipal Police Training Council (MPTC). Derogatory information will be evaluated and may result in disqualification. All convictions must be reported. Conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment depending upon the relationship of the violation or omission to the duties of the position. Psychological Evaluation: As stated in Section 58 of the Civil Service Law, you will be required to participate in a psychological evaluation to determine your fitness to perform the essential duties of the position prior to appointment. Failure to meet the standards may result in your offer of employment being rescinded or in your disqualification. An eligible will be called for a psychological assessment as needed to fill existing and anticipated vacancies. Residency
In accordance with Section 23-4 (a) of Civil Service Law, preference in appointment may be given to residents in the jurisdiction where the vacancy exists. When preference in certification is given, an eligible must have been a resident of such municipality for at least one month prior to the date of certification and must be a resident of such municipality at the time of certification and appointment. BACKGROUND & FINGERPRINTING: Background and Fingerprinting checks may be required to determine suitability for employment for all positions. ADMISSION LETTER: Approved candidates will receive an “Admission Letter’. Candidates will not be admitted to the exam unless they have an “Admission Letter”. If you do not receive an admission letter at least 10 days prior to the examination please call the Human Resources Office at (315) 946-7483. Disqualified candidates will be sent a notice of disqualification. PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS: College graduates with student loans may be eligible to have part of their loan paid for after being employed in a full-time position at Wayne County.
