What the job involves
(illustrative only) Responsible for the total nursing care of all patients during assigned tour of duty; Observes condition of patients and records any mental and physical changes or supervises RNs performing such duties; Supervises RNs in assessing nursing care needs and in carrying out a nursing care plan; Conducts and attends related meetings; Coordinator of RN staffing and consultant to facility staffing personnel; Collaborates with medical staff in care and treatment of patients; Instructs and assists RNs, Licensed Practical Nurses and auxiliary personnel on nursing problems, neighborhood management and related activities; Assures adequate follow-up of personnel issues, and staffing plan issues; Coordinator of transportation, personnel, and outside appointments; Supervises the activities of professional subordinates in the bedside care of patients and the administration of medications and treatments; Maintains accurate and descriptive records of the medical treatment and nursing care of patients; Acts as liaison to interdisciplinary team members, department heads, physicians, community services and hospital personnel; Coordinates inter shift and interdisciplinary report process; Orients new personnel and oversees participation in related staff development and in-service training programs; Makes scheduled rounds of nursing unit(s) and observes patient and/or resident condition and checks quality of nursing care and treatment: Arranges staffing patterns and maintains related records of professional and non-professional nursing services staff on nursing units; Coordinates nursing assessment of patients and/or residents and oversees provision of supportive or restorative nursing care; May perform in-service, quality assurance, neighborhood manager, infection control, new hire coordinator, or other special duties as assigned. Orients new personnel and oversees participation in related staff development and in-service training programs; Prepares a variety of records and reports; Does related work as required. Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics Thorough knowledge of professional nursing techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices and skill in their application; good knowledge of clinical nursing division or unit management and supply distribution practices; ability to supervise the administration of therapeutic measures prescribed; ability to secure the cooperation of others; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to understand and carry out technical, oral and written directions; good observation; mental alertness; emotional stability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
