Correction Officer I

An employee in this class has immediate responsibility for directing and supervising inmates and maintaining order and security at Suffolk County correctional facilities. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining the custody, safety and well-being of prisoners by enforcing laws, rules and regulations to prevent disturbances, assaults and escapes. Correction Officers are designated by New York State law as peace officers and may be required to carry firearms in the performance of certain duties. Does related work as required.

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma by the date of appointment. Necessary Special Requirements : After appointment, the incumbent will be required to obtain a Peace Officer Training Certificate recognized by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council. Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license at the time of appointment; appointees must maintain a valid license throughout their employment in this title. The examination for this position will
consist of four parts:
I. The written test will cover knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such
areas as:
1. Preparing written material;
2. Understanding and interpreting written material;
3. Preparing and maintaining records;
4. Understanding and applying rules and regulations related to the security and control of correctional inmates. Those candidates who receive passing grades on the written test will be called for the qualifying medical/physical and personality/psychological evaluations and physical fitness-screening test as the needs of the service require.
II. Medical/Physical Evaluation (See page 4): Candidates will be required to meet the medical/physical standards for Correction Officer I as prescribed by Suffolk County. Candidates who successfully meet the standards may be required to be re-evaluated at intervals prescribed by the Suffolk County Office of Employee Health Services.
III. Personality/Psychological Evaluation : Candidates who pass the written exam will be called for a qualifying personality/psychological evaluation as the needs of the service require. This evaluation will consist of one or more written tests and an interview designed to assess the suitability of the candidates’ personality for the position of Correction Officer I. This part of the exam will be administered during the workweek (Monday – Friday).

In accordance with the provisions of Section 23 of the New York State Civil Service Law, the Civil Service Department will give preference in certification to legal residents of Suffolk County. To be deemed a legal resident of Suffolk County for the purpose of being granted preference as such, a candidate must have been a legal resident at the time of certification and for at least 90 calendar days prior thereto. Citizenship Requirement : Candidates must be a United States citizen at the time of appointment.
