Lieutenant (Police)

An employee in this class performs an important law enforcement function involving the operation of a precinct, bureau or section, according to established procedures and policies of the Police Department. Responsibilities include assigning officers to their posts, evaluating their work performance, and instructing them in new and approved police methods. The incumbent performs both technical and administrative duties. Does related work as required.

To be eligible, a candidate must now be serving and have served on a continuous basis with permanent or contingent permanent competitive status as a Sergeant (Police) in the Suffolk County Police Department for at least two (2) years immediately preceding the written

The written test will consist of
two parts:
PART I - The scope of this part of the examination will be designed to cover knowledge, skills and/or abilities in such areas as: 1. Law enforcement methods and practices; 2. New York State Laws; 3. Preparing written material in a police setting; 4. Understanding and interpreting written material; 5. Planning, supervising and administering police programs and activities.
