What the job involves

An employee in this class provides initial first-aid treatment or emergency medical care either through an ambulance or a non-ambulance service at the site of an occurrence. These positions differ in levels of care they are certified to render as outlined by New York State Department of Health and Suffolk County Emergency Medical Services Guidelines. Direction is received from administrative supervisors or higher level professional personnel who review work through Quality Improvement Programs and online communications with Medical Control. Does related work as required.

Minimum qualifications

Possession of one of the following certificates issued by the New York State Department of Health: Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certificate; Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate Certificate; Emergency Medical Technician-Critical Care Certificate; or Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Certificate Necessary Special Requirements
1. Candidates must maintain the appropriate Emergency Medical Technician Certificate throughout employment in this position. 2 . Candidates may be required to possess the appropriate New York State driver's license, and maintain such license throughout employment in this position. 3 . Candidates must be free of any speech or hearing defects that would impair functioning in this position. 4 . In jurisdictions where required, the incumbent must obtain certification of completion of the appropriate National Incident Management System (NIMS) entry-level course(s), including Incident Command System (ICS) training, within 26 weeks of appointment.

Subject of examination

The only subject of the examination will be an evaluation of the candidates’ training and experience. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience against the background of the duties of the position. All candidates should submit an application on or before the last filing date. After a preliminary review of qualifications, all approved candidates will be required to complete and return a questionnaire describing their relevant training and experience. The rating of training and experience will be based upon the information candidates provide on the questionnaire. Ambiguity and vagueness will not be resolved in the candidate’s favor. Additional information concerning a candidate’s training and experience will not be accepted after the questionnaire has been rated. Rank on the eligible list will be determined by the scores received on the training and experience evaluation plus veterans’ credits if applicable.
