What the job involves

An employee in this class is responsible for the administrative and technical supervision of a major laboratory section. The incumbent performs and supervises both routine and complex testing and analyses of various environmental samples. The work involves supervising and participating in the use and general maintenance of sophisticated modern laboratory equipment. Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor who reviews work through staff conferences, written reports and observation of laboratory operations. Does related work as required.

Minimum qualifications

To be eligible, a candidate must now be serving and have served on a continuous basis with permanent or contingent permanent competitive status as a Chemist III and twenty-four (24) credit hours in Chemistry, including Organic Chemistry, for at least two (2) years in the jurisdiction in which the candidate seeks promotion immediately preceding the written examination date. Provisional time immediately preceding a permanent appointment to the same title(s) will be credited. Necessary Special Requirement At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.

Subject of examination

The written test will cover
knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:
1. Preparing written material; 2. Analytical chemistry, including techniques, equipment, and procedures for inorganic and organic analyses; 3. Administrative supervision; 4. Organization and interpretation of data, including elementary statistical analysis and quality control; 5. Principles and applications of microbiology related to the testing of both treated and untreated water.
