What the job involves
An employee in this class performs routine, entry level laboratory tests and assembles data on test results. The employee takes samples and performs tests pertaining to wastewater, water quality, mosquito identification, soil, concrete, etc. The employee may be assigned to a position in any one of several specialized fields. Performance is reviewed by a technical supervisor who checks and interprets test results, and by an administrative supervisor who reviews performance for adherence to established policies and procedures. Performs related work as required.
Minimum qualifications
Either:
(a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with an Associate's degree* in one of the natural sciences (physical or biological); or,
(b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of technical laboratory experience; or,
(c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b). *Please attach to the application a copy of your college transcript(s) which must have your name, college name and date of graduation printed on it by the institution. Grade reports, incomplete transcripts and other similar documents are unacceptable .
Subject of examination
The written test will cover
knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:
1. Analytical chemistry, including techniques, equipment, and procedures for inorganic and organic analyses; 2. General laboratory practices, techniques, and equipment; 3. Organization and interpretation of data, including elementary statistical analysis and quality control.
Residency
is not required for taking any examinations. However, some jurisdictions, such as schools, libraries, etc., give hiring preference to residents. Some towns also require employees to establish residency within the township. For employment in a Suffolk County Department, with only limited exceptions set forth in Suffolk County Law, residency within Suffolk County or Nassau County is required within five years of employment with the county. In any case in which residency preference is given, the appointee(s) must meet a specific residency standard as defined in the Civil Service Rules. 16. Saturday
