Payroll Supervisor

An employee in this class supervises and participates in the processing of payrolls and payroll deductions for a municipality or large Suffolk County department. The work involves the exercise of considerable judgment and initiative, and the incumbent is required to act as a liaison between the Payroll Unit and interrelated departments. The work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, consultations and the submission of required reports. Does related work as required.

To be eligible, a candidate must now be serving and have served on a continuous basis with permanent or contingent permanent competitive status as a(n) Administrative Assistant, Administrator I, Chief Office Assistant, Principal Account Clerk or Secretarial Assistant for at least two (2) years in the jurisdiction in which the candidate seeks promotion immediately preceding the written examination date. Provisional time immediately preceding a permanent appointment to the same title(s) will be credited.

The written test will cover
knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:
1. Preparing written material; 2. Understanding and interpreting written material; 3. Understanding and interpreting tabular material; 4. Evaluating conclusions in light of known facts; 5. Supervision.
