Correction Corporal

The work involves responsibility on an assigned shift for the enforcement of rules and regulations governing the custody, security, conduct, discipline, safety and general well being of inmates in a county correctional facility. This position differs from that of Correction Officer by virtue of the increased level of responsibility and supervisory responsibility. The incumbent performs routine Correction Officer work and is responsible for the custody, supervision and general well being of inmates and Correction Officers on an assigned shift. In addition, the incumbent functions as an officer-in-charge on an assigned shift in the absence of a Correction Sergeant. The work is performed under general supervision of a higher ranking officer with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in dealing with day to day situations in the facility. Does related work as required. NOTE: Calculators are ALLOWED for this exam.

Candidates must be permanently employed in the competitive class, or under section 55A, and must have served on a continuous basis for twenty-four (24) months as a Corrections Officer at the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility. According to Civil Service Law, section 52.10(a) which became effective September 4, 2024, time served provisionally immediately preceding permanent appointment shall count towards meeting the time in title and the employee shall be eligible to take the promotion examination.
