Correction Sergeant

The work involves responsibility for supervising the booking of inmates and for insuring enforcement of rules and regulations governing security, conduct, discipline, safety and the general well being of inmates and staff of the County Correctional Facility. Work procedures are well defined but incumbents must be alert to possibilities of emergency situations arising and exercise sound judgment when problems occur. The work is performed under general supervision of the Correction Lieutenant with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment in dealing with incidents at the facility. Supervision is exercised over the work of Correction Officers assigned to a shift. The incumbent does related work as required. NOTE: Calculators are ALLOWED for this exam.

Candidates must be permanently employed in the competitive class, or under section 55A, and must have served on a continuous basis for twelve (12) months as a Correction Corporal or thirty-six (36) months as a Corrections Officer at the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility. According to Civil Service Law, section 52.10(a) which became effective September 4, 2024, time served provisionally immediately preceding permanent appointment shall count towards meeting the time in title and the employee shall be eligible to take the promotion examination.
