What the job involves

This work involves responsibility for the performance of a variety of unrelated clerical tasks requiring a general understanding of specific regulations, rules, office procedures and policies. Specific duties vary with the needs of the department. Procedures are usually fixed but detailed instructions are given for new or difficult assignments. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with prescribed procedures permitting leeway for the use of independent judgment in carrying out details of the work. Supervision may be exercised over other workers. Does related work as required.

Minimum qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of clerical experience which includes experience using Microsoft Office products Word, Excel, PowerPoint and/or Publisher.

Subject of examination

A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and/or abilities in the following areas:
1. NAME AND NUMBER CHECKING - These questions test for the ability to distinguish between sets of words, letters, and/or numbers that are almost exactly alike. Material is usually presented in two or three columns, and you will have to determine how the entry in the first column compares with the entry in the second column and possibly the third. You will be instructed to mark your answers according to a designated code provided in the directions.
2. OPERATIONS WITH LETTERS AND NUMBERS - These questions test for skills and abilities in operations involving alphabetizing, comparing, checking and counting. The questions require you to follow the specific directions given for each question which may involve alphabetizing, comparing, checking and counting given groups of letters and/or numbers.
3. UNDERSTANDING AND INTERPRETING WRITTEN MATERIAL - These questions test for the ability to understand and interpret written material. You will be presented with brief reading passages and will be asked questions about the passages. You should base your answers to the questions only on what is presented in the passages and not on what you may happen to know about the topic. Test guide: The New York State Department of Civil Service has not prepared a test guide for this examination. However, candidates may find information in the publication 'General Guide to Written Tests' helpful in preparing for this test. Residency

There are no residency requirements for this examination. However, preference in appointment may be given to successful candidates who have been residents of Otsego County for at least one month immediately preceding the scheduled date of the written examination.

Location

The eligible list resulting from this examination will be used to fill vacancies as they occur in Otsego County departments under the jurisdiction of the Otsego County Personnel/Civil Service Department.
