Zoning and Building Coordinator (City of Geneva)

The work involves responsibility for managing the City’s zoning and code enforcement services. This includes supervising and carrying out building inspection and code enforcement activities. Knowledge of the City’s Housing Code, Stare Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and the City’s Zoning Ordinance is required. Work also involves undertaking various planning and zoning studies and providing professional staff assistance to various boards and committees. Work involves supervising a small staff of inspectors and enforcement personnel. Position reports to the Assistant City Manager. Does related work as required. Background Investigation: Candidates may be subject to a thorough background investigation and psychological evaluation to determine suitability for appointment. Applicants may be required to authorize access to educational, employment, criminal history and other records check as part of such investigation. Criminal convictions or other offenses are subject to evaluation and may result in disqualification. Applicants will be required to submit the necessary fees for the fingerprint processing, where required. Special Requirement for Appointment in School Districts or BOCES: Per Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, to be employed in a position designated by a School District or BOCES as involving direct contact with students, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required.

EITHER:
1. Possession of a Bachelor’s degree, or higher, AND two (2) years of full-time paid, or its part-time equivalent, experience in code enforcement, urban planning, architecture, engineering or construction with at least one (1) year in a supervisory capacity; OR
2. Completion of sixty (60) semester credit hours AND four (4) years of full-time paid, or its part-time equivalent, experience in code enforcement, urban planning, architecture, engineering or construction with at least one (1) year in a supervisory capacity; OR
3. High school diploma or equivalency AND six (6) years of full-time paid, or its part-time equivalent, experience in code enforcement, urban planning, architecture, engineering or construction with at least one (1) year in a supervisory capacity; OR
4. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (1), (2), and (3) above. Note: Study in a regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis for up to two (2) years with 30 credit hours equaling one year of experience. Special Note: Education: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Anticipated Eligibility: Applicants who lack thirty days, or less, of meeting the minimum qualifications by the date of the examination will be admitted conditionally to the examination. However, proof of the additional days’ qualifications must be submitted prior to the establishment of the eligible list. Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements: According to the amended Civil Service Law 54 (amended September 4, 2024), applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the age or education requirements are met.

1. Preparing written material - These questions test for the ability to present information clearly and accurately, and to organize paragraphs logically and comprehensibly. For some questions, you will be given information in two or three sentences followed by four restatements of the information. You must then choose the best version. For other questions, you will be given paragraphs with their sentences out of order. You must then choose, from four suggestions, the best order for the sentences.
