What the job involves

This is a Trainee position involving learning the duties, responsibilities and routines involved in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant and/or a wastewater treatment plant. The successful applicant will have a basic knowledge of science and elementary chemistry. A good knowledge and/or aptitude in the following areas is highly desirable: plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems. The incumbent will undergo on-the-job training to become qualified as a Water and/or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator and will assist in all aspects of the operation and maintenance of the treatment plant(s). An employee in this class is required to satisfactorily complete the training and experience requirements of the New York State Department of Conservation for certification appropriate for the appointing authority’s facility/facilities where they will be working. The work will be performed under the direct supervision of a licensed Water and/or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator. A Water and/or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee does related work as required. Typical Qualifications RESIDENCY: Candidates must have been legal residents of the following jurisdiction(s) for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the written test: Livingston County, or One of the following Counties: Allegany, Genesee, Monroe, Ontario, Steuben or Wyoming Applicants must meet all requirements described in the following table in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment: Qualification Option # 1 Training/Education Possession of a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma. General experience None required. Supervisory experience N.A. License/Certification Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license. (if required to drive.) Other requirements See Special Qualifications below. SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS : An appropriate driver’s license must be maintained throughout employment, if required to drive by appointing authority. A driving record evidencing safe and responsible vehicle operation is required, if required to drive by appointing authority. Must authorize and execute any necessary releases to enable the appointing authority to verify licensure and driving history involving violations and/or crimes, if required to drive by appointing authority. Licensure and certificates must be maintained in good standing throughout employment. An employee in this class is required to satisfactorily complete the training and experience requirements of the New York State Department of Conservation appropriate for the facility they will be working. EDUCATIONAL DEGREE : If an educational degree is a minimum qualification for this title, you may be approved to take the examination if you have not received the degree but expect to receive it before the next examination date. In order to be conditionally approved, you will need to clearly indicate on your application for examination the degree you expect to receive and the date on which you expect to receive it. If your application is conditionally approved, you will be issued an admission letter and will be permitted to take the examination on the scheduled date. You must provide to the Livingston County Human Resources Department written proof of your receipt of the required educational degree. Failure to do so will result in the disapproval of your examination application. Candidates whose applications are disapproved, regardless of their performance on the examination, will not be eligible for permanent appointment to positions for which such eligible list is certified.
