What the job involves

This is specialized clerical work of a moderately complex nature involving the transcription of physician orders and other medical dictation. Work is similar to that found in other clerical series, except that this position requires special knowledge gained through previous experience or training in medical terminology and usage. Transcribed material is reviewed upon completion for content, accuracy, and correctness. The work is performed under the general supervision of the assigned supervising nurse with wide leeway allowed for carrying out the details of the work. Supervision of others is not a responsibility of this class. A Medical Typist does related work as assigned. Typical Qualifications RESIDENCY: Candidates must have been legal residents of the following jurisdiction(s) for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the written test: Livingston County, or One of the following Counties: Allegany, Genesee, Monroe, Ontario, Steuben or Wyoming Applicants must meet all requirements for one of the following qualification options in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment: Qualification Option # 1 2 3 Training/Education Possession of an Associate’s [1] degree in medical administrative assistant or medical assisting. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency diploma; AND Completion of a one year medical secretarial course. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency diploma. General experience None required. One (1) year of full-time paid experience in a hospital, laboratory, medical doctor’s office, or similar health care facility which shall have included transcription of medical dictation; OR One (1) year of full-time, paid experience providing direct or non–direct nursing services which shall include making entries in computerized patient records. Supervisory experience None required. License/ Certification N.A. Other requirements None required. Part-time service will be given prorated credit toward experience requirements. [1] Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. A list of acceptable companies who provide this service can be found on the Internet at http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/degrees.cfm . You must pay the required evaluation fee. EDUCATIONAL DEGREE : If an educational degree is a minimum qualification for this title, you may be approved to take the examination if you have not received the degree but expect to receive it before the next examination date. In order to be conditionally approved, you will need to clearly indicate on your application for examination the degree you expect to receive and the date on which you expect to receive it. If your application is conditionally approved, you will be issued an admission letter and will be permitted to take the examination on the scheduled date. You must provide to the Livingston County Human Resources Department written proof of your receipt of the required educational degree. Failure to do so will result in the disapproval of your examination application. Candidates whose applications are disapproved, regardless of their performance on the examination, will not be eligible for permanent appointment to positions for which such eligible list is certified. Exam fees will not be refunded.
